Trip Details
Dates: June 28 – July 3, 2027
Final dates may be slightly adjusted and will be announced.
Location: Nadi, Fiji (located on the western coast of the main island of Viti Levu.)
Fiji Mission- A wish come true
Nadi (pronounced nan-DEE) is the third-largest city in Fiji, after Suva and Lautoka, with a population of 59,707 (2017). It is located on the western side of the main island of Viti Levu. Nadi is multiracial, with many of its inhabitants being Asians, Indian or Indigenous Fijians, along with a large transient population of foreign tourists. Sugar cane production and tourism are the main sources of its local economy.
The interest in the Fiji mission started with a kind-hearted, retired woman who had a burden to help her people in her hometown in Fiji. Before the COVID pandemic, Salome had invited the Southcenter Seventh-day Adventist church to come and serve the people in Fiji. However, when COVID hit, everything was placed on hold. In 2025, Akuila, Salome’s brother, called the Southcenter church and revived the discussions about the Fiji mission. Sadly, Akuila confessed he wanted to fulfill his sister’s wish, who passed away during the pandemic.
The Fiji mission is not only a fulfillment of Salome’s wish but an answer to the cries of many Fijians who need medical, dental, and vision services that are scarcely available in the island. Health education is also a critical need in Nadi that will help Fijians redesign their way of life.
A Collaborative Mission Team
The Fiji mission will be a collaborative effort by the Northwest Mission of Hope (US), in partnership with the Blessed Hope Health Center (US), the Fiji Mission, the Nadi local government, and the Nadi local church. All these organizations will work together to ensure safe and smooth operations and services all throughout the mission.
Health Needs in Fiji
Type 2 diabetes and hypertension are the two most common health challenges many Fijians suffer from. Poor access to health care is worsened by the lack of health education among Fijians. We believe that knowledge is power. Our mission team will provide health screening, health coaching and seminars, and food demonstrations to help Fijians combat Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and other medical conditions that threaten their declining health.
❤️ Chronic Diseases (NCDs)
Fiji is currently facing a severe Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) crisis, with approximately 17% to 30% of the adult population living with diabetes and over one-third experiencing hypertension. Together, these conditions are leading causes of mortality and morbidities like cardiovascular disease and amputations (NIH, 2024).
Common causes of these conditions include:
- Type 2 Diabetes
- High blood pressure/hypertension
🔹 How you can help?
Medical providers can offer screenings, basic treatment, and patient education focused on prevention and lifestyle changes.
🦷 Dental Health Needs
Fijians have also limited access to dental services that lead to poor dental hygiene such as:
- Untreated cavities
- Gum disease
- Chronic dental pain
🔹 How you can help?
Dentists and assistants can provide immediate relief, basic treatments, and education on oral hygiene.
👁 Vision Care Gaps
Many people in Fiji live with uncorrected vision issues due to limited access to eye care.
🔹 How you can help?
- Vision volunteers can provide:
- Vision screenings
- Reading glasses
- Referrals for further care
🧴 Skin Conditions (Dermatology)
Tropical climates can contribute to:
● Skin infections
● Fungal conditions
● Chronic skin issues
🔹 How you can help?
Dermatology support can bring both treatment and education for prevention and hygiene.
👐 Musculoskeletal Pain (Chiropractic & Acupuncture)
Many individuals experience:
● Back pain
● Joint pain
● Physical strain from daily labor
🔹 How you can help?
Chiropractors and acupuncturists can provide relief, improve mobility, and educate patients on body care.
💊 Access to Healthcare
Because Fiji consists of 169 islands, access to consistent healthcare can be challenging:
● Travel depends on boats, planes, and weather
● Some communities are seen only occasionally
● Follow-up care is limited
🔹 How you can help?
Every interaction matters — even short-term care can make a lasting impact.
🥗 Nutrition & Health Education
Poor lifestyle and unhealthy dietary changes have contributed to rising health concerns. The NEWSTART program will be introduced to the people in Fiji. It is a scientifically researched lifestyle-change program based on eight fundamental principles proven to help you achieve optimum health.

🔹 How you can help?
Health educators can teach using the NEWSTART program to lower the risks of health conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, kidney disease, etc. It will also help in
● Disease prevention
● Development of healthy lifestyle habits
