Trip Details

Dates: July 5–9, 2027
Final dates may be slightly adjusted and will be announced.

Location: Nukuʻalofa, Tongatapu, Tonga
Nukuʻalofa is the capital city of Tonga, located on the main island of Tongatapu.

Why Tonga?

Tonga is a chain of islands stretching across the South Pacific, neighbor to Fiji, Samoa, and New Zealand, and straddling the International Date Line. Its communities are spread across multiple island groups, which means many patients live far from consistent medical services — where access to care depends on transportation, weather, and available resources.

But geography alone does not tell the full story. Tonga is facing growing health challenges that create a real and urgent need for hands-on care, education, and prevention. This is where our team can make a meaningful difference — not only by treating conditions, but by building relationships, empowering communities, and offering encouragement that lasts long after we leave.

This mission is about more than medicine. It is about showing up for people who need to know they have not been forgotten.

Health Needs in Tonga

Tonga faces several ongoing health challenges that make medical outreach both impactful and deeply needed. Our mission team plays an important role in supporting local communities through care, education, and compassion.

❤️ Chronic Diseases (NCDs)

Tonga has one of the highest rates of non-communicable diseases in the world.

Common conditions include:

  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Heart disease
  • Obesity

🔹 How you can help:
Medical providers can offer screenings, basic treatment, and patient education focused on prevention and lifestyle changes.

🦷 Dental Health Needs

Access to dental care is limited for many individuals, leading to:

  • Untreated cavities
  • Gum disease
  • Chronic dental pain

🔹 How you can help:
Dentists and assistants can provide immediate relief, basic treatments, and education on oral hygiene.

👁️ Vision Care Gaps

Many people in Tonga live with uncorrected vision issues due to limited access to eye care.

🔹 How you can help:
Vision volunteers can provide:

  • Vision screenings
  • Reading glasses
  • Referrals for further care

🧴 Skin Conditions (Dermatology)

Tropical climates can contribute to:

  • Skin infections
  • Fungal conditions
  • Chronic skin issues

🔹 How you can help:
Dermatology support can bring both treatment and education for prevention and hygiene.

👐 Musculoskeletal Pain (Chiropractic & Acupuncture)

Many individuals experience:

  • Back pain
  • Joint pain
  • Physical strain from daily labor

🔹 How you can help:
Chiropractors and acupuncturists can provide relief, improve mobility, and educate patients on body care.

💊 Access to Healthcare

Because Tonga consists of 169 islands, access to consistent healthcare can be challenging:

  • Travel depends on boats, planes, and weather
  • Some communities are seen only occasionally
  • Follow-up care is limited

🔹 How you can help:
Every interaction matters — even short-term care can make a lasting impact.

🥗 Nutrition & Health Education

Lifestyle and dietary changes have contributed to rising health concerns.

🔹 How you can help:
Health educators can teach:

  • Nutrition basics
  • Disease prevention
  • Healthy lifestyle habits

♿ Mobility Aid Support (New Initiative)

In some communities, access to mobility aids such as walkers, canes, and wheelchairs may be limited, especially for elderly patients or those with injuries or chronic conditions.

We are exploring ways to support these needs during our mission trip.

🔹 How You Can Help

We are considering accepting donations of:

  • Walkers
  • Canes
  • Lightweight wheelchairs

Final needs will be confirmed in coordination with local partners in Tonga.

Your role—no matter your specialty—helps to:

Fun Facts About Tonga

🏝️ 169 Islands, One Kingdom

Tonga is made up of 169 islands, but only about 36 are inhabited. This island geography makes healthcare outreach especially meaningful.

🤝 The Friendly Islands

Tonga is known as “The Friendly Islands,” a name that reflects the warmth, kindness, and hospitality of the Tongan people.

👑 A Pacific Monarchy

Tonga is the only constitutional monarchy in the Pacific, making it culturally and politically unique. Notably, it is also the only Pacific nation that was never colonized or conquered by a foreign power — preserving a sense of sovereignty and cultural continuity that is rare in the region.

🌊 Life Across the Ocean

Because many communities are separated by water, transportation can depend on boats, flights, weather, and local conditions.

🌋 A Dramatic Natural Setting

Tonga is located near the Tonga Trench and the Tonga-Kermadec volcanic arc, one of the most active seismic regions on Earth.
